Newsletter - T3, W8 - 13/9/24
From the Principal
I would like to acknowledge and congratulate our senior students for almost completing their HSC courses for 2024. Our Year 12 students are at the end of their 13-year school journey. These young adults have led the school community with distinction, they are a credit to themselves and their families. One of the highlights of being an educator in a high school setting is watching students grow from children into young adults. These students have come into St Mary’s as little children and leave as young adults ready to take on the world. We will be formally farewelling our Year 12’s with a Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony in Week 10. A letter has gone home to all Year 12 students and their families outlining key dates.
Family Mass
Please join us for the Parish Family Mass on Saturday evening commencing at 5.00pm. The College has a close relationship with the Parish and it would be fantastic to have a strong representation.
Showcase
St Mary’s annual Showcase evening is next Tuesday, 17 September 6pm-8pm, please come along and support our talented students. I would like to thank Mr Justin Hayward, his team and most importantly students for the hard work that went into organising this event.
Reflection
I would like to share the following reflection from Br Peter Carroll fms based on the work of Fr Richard Rohr who is an American Franciscan Priest and writer on Spirituality.
Richard Rohr writes about an Order-Disorder-Re-order paradigm. Rohr argues that through history, a universal pattern can be found in societies, spiritualities, philosophies and life. It’s seen in the changing seasons, the rise and fall of civilisations, Biblical stories and sacred myths, and, for Christians, most clearly in the paschal mystery-the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. We find it in our own personal lives. He claims that growth and development occur by passing beyond some perfect order through an often painful and, at times, seemingly unnecessary disorder of chaos, to an enlightened reorder or resurrection…
Rohr stresses the need to see this process as a unity: “Order, by itself, normally wants to eliminate any disorder and diversity creating a narrow and cognitive rigidity in both people and systems. Disorder, by itself, closes us off from any primal union, meaning, and eventually even sanity in people and systems. Reorder, or transformation of people and systems, happens when both are seen to work together.”
Based on a reflection by Br Peter Carrol fms
Have a great weekend

At our assembly this week, we were discussing St Paul’s letter to the Philippians. In this letter, Paul reminds us to “rejoice in the Lord”. As we look towards the end of the term, we used this opportunity to celebrate the many ways our students have excelled this term. We looked at all the amazing gifts our students have shared with each other across faith, sport, culture and academics. It was a true celebration of gratitude for our experiences!
This weekend, we have our Parish Family Mass. We look forward to seeing you there and sharing a slice of pizza with you!
Essential Conversation - Giving and receiving help
Sometimes young people may see posts from friends or acquaintances that contain references to self-harm and suicide. If your young person is concerned about someone because of something they posted online, encourage them to always take it seriously and to talk to you.
In these instances, if your young person believes that the person is at immediate risk of harm, you should advise them to do the following:
1. If they are already talking to the person, they could encourage them to call emergency services (000) themselves.
2. If they are not talking to the person, if the person is not open to receiving help, or if there is no time to spare, call 000 immediately.
3. If they or you know the family, you could contact them immediately.
If the person is not at immediate risk of harm, and your young person decides to respond, encourage them to:
1. Set boundaries for themselves regarding how much time they have available and the type of support they can and cannot offer.
2. Pick a way of communicating that they feel most comfortable with and is most appropriate for the relationship they have with the person. They could also ask the person how they would prefer to be contacted.
3. Avoid using reactions or emojis that might reinforce unsafe content, or that could be interpreted incorrectly.
Watch this short clip: How to respond to someone.
Read more at #Chatsafe eSafety Giving and seeking help in relationships.
If you have any concerns about your young person please contact the college. It is important for the College to know any wellbeing issues that may impact on learning and behaviour at school.
Our College invites all parents to work in partnership with us to keep your young person safe. Should your young person experience a physical or mental health concern, particularly if it results in a presentation at a hospital Emergency Department, we highly recommend that you work with us to ensure that they are supported and cared for when returning to school.

Catch the Wave
This week, Year 8 and Year 10 Ministry students participated in the Catch the Wave experience in the Relihan Centre. During Catch the Wave, students listened to talks on various topics, and student sharings from young people who have been involved in the Ministry program and from those who attended SHINE last month.
Students were lucky enough to have the worship team, Wildfire, with them for the day, and a number of other young adults from across the diocese.
The Catch the Wave experience was an enjoyable chance to get to know other students and deepen our understanding and experience of faith in a fun way.
Students in Year 8 will be given the opportunity to express their interest in being a part of the Year 9 Ministry class this week.
Festa Christi
In Week 3 of this Term, six Year 8 students attended Festa Christi at Coffs Coast Adventure Centre at Bonville with other Year 8 students from across the Diocese.
The boys and girls had separate retreats, with the boys going on Tuesday and Wednesday, while the girls went on Thursday and Friday. For some of us, it was our first experience of a diocese wide event.
The two-day, overnight retreat involved activities that focused on ‘walking in another person’s shoes,’ having students overcome their fears, and gaining a greater overall awareness of social justice. Students participated in several physical challenges including a commando course and giant swing, as well as prayer, reflection and the celebration of the Eucharist.
Shine
The annual Student Discipleship event, SHINE, was held at St John Paul College in Coffs Harbour in Week 5, with around 600 students attending from across the Lismore Diocese. The theme of this year's gathering was Burn,’ inspired by scripture to emphasise the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
St Mary’s took almost 40 students from Years 9-12 to the event participating in games, activities, small group discussions, engaging workshops and powerful reflective experiences, including contemporary praise and worship. There were a number of keynote speakers who shared their stories and motivated students to become their true selves.
SHINE inspired students to be connected, committed and courageous young people, ready to step up and share the gifts of Joy, Power and Courage to all around them.
Senior Retreats - Term 4
During transition week (Week 6) in Term 4, the Stage 6 Retreat and Year 12 Retreat will be held.
The Stage 6 Retreat will be for the incoming Year 11 and 12 students, taking place at Windara on Wednesday, 13 November. Further details and costs for the retreat will be sent out through Compass in the coming weeks. This is a compulsory school day to enable the two year groups to come together before beginning classes together the following week.
The incoming Year 12 Retreat will take place on Thursday, 14 and Friday, 15 November at Camp Drewe. The purpose of the Retreat is to enhance the spirituality of students. This is a valuable time for our students to deepen their friendships with each other and to set personal goals as they embark on their final year of school.
Further details and costs for the retreat will be provided via Compass in the coming weeks.

Teen Mental Health First Aid
October is Mental Health Month. Once again, our Year 10 students will be completing the Teen Mental Health First Aid Training which gives teenagers the skills they need to recognise and help with mental health problems and crises in their friends, and to get the help of an adult quickly.
Mental health problems are very common in adolescents. Young people will often turn to each other when stressed or upset, and try to help each other, taking too much on. This course teaches them not to try to take on these problems alone but to identify when someone might be struggling and need support and assist them to get that help.
This course is offered to our Year 10 Cohort each year
Social Media Ban for Children
The hot topic in the news at the moment is “should social media be banned for children AND if so, at what age?”
Our friends from Safe On Social have shared an interesting article discussing the responsibilities of schools, parents and the media platforms themselves in ensuring our children are informed and educated about the use of social media.
R U Ok Day
The R U OK Day activities will take place at the College this Friday, 13 September. Staff and students are encouraged to wear yellow including yellow accessories and will take part in a number of activities organised by the Student Representative Council including staff and student affirmations.

Year 9 Camp Kokoda
All Year 9 students recently attended Camp Kokoda Located near Maroon QLD. Students completed challenging activities including high ropes, bush walking, canoeing and abseiling. The activities help promote a sense of self-worth, teamwork, resilience and leadership. Our students conducted themselves admirably in hot and challenging conditions. It was a privilege to watch our students thrive and challenge themselves in a different environment. Also, thank you to all the staff who attended.

Wakakirri
St Mary’s Catholic College recently had the opportunity to collaborate with St Mary’s Primary School in the filming of their Wakakirri Story-Dance. The filming took place last Thursday and Friday, and it was a fantastic experience for our high school students to work alongside the younger primary school students.
The College students enthusiastically engaged in the project, showcasing their talents and creativity. It was heartwarming to see the collaboration and excitement as our school participated for the first time in this event.
The Wakakirri Story-Dances provide a platform for students to express their thoughts, ideas, and aspirations through the art of storytelling and dance. The filming process allowed our students to contribute to the final product, which will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase their skills and strengthen the bond between the College and the primary school.
We look forward to seeing the completed Story-Dance video and are proud of our students for their dedication and hard work during the filming process. This experience has been truly enriching for all involved, and we are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this meaningful project.

Under 14 Girls
The Under 14 Girls volleyball team had an outstanding day, going undefeated in their matches and taking home the trophy! With a total of 6 games played, the team showcased their solid skills and excellent teamwork throughout the day.
The U14 Girls were selected from a large turnout of trials that began in Week 1 of Term 3. Their natural competitive spirit was evident from the start, and it translated into their dominant performance on the court.
Several players stood out for their exceptional play. The team's cohesion and ability to work together as a unit were key factors in their success. Their undefeated record is a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the players and Coach. Congratulations Josie Ryan, Mackenzie Pearce, Ella Davis, Emerald Dean, Lizzie Carey, Anna Bennett, Elly Graham, Gemma Reichmann, Paige Whitney and Alice Shields on a fantastic day representing our College.
Under 16 Girls
The Under 14 Girls volleyball team had an outstanding day, going undefeated in their matches and taking home the trophy! With a total of 6 games played, the team showcased their solid skills and excellent teamwork throughout the day.
The 16's girls volleyball team had an impressive performance, winning five out of six games securing them the championship trophy. The victory was determined by a point score difference, as their main rivals, McAuley CC, also won five matches.
This team demonstrated exceptional teamwork and resilience, especially considering they played with only one reserve player throughout the day. Their ability to work cohesively as a unit was a key factor in their success, showcasing their dedication and skill on the court. The trophy win not only reflects their hard work but also highlights their competitive spirit against strong opponents. Well done Emilee Reichmann, Bella Roberts, Jaylah Olive, Sarah Green, Violet Zellar.

Under 14 Boys
Game one for the St Mary’s U14 boys was a little unsteady at the start, but once they found their rhythm, the second half of the game against Mt Saint Pats boys proved to be a great start to the competition, with a win. Game two was not a great start, with some inconsistent play in the first few minutes against St Joseph’s, Banora. In the second half, they tied the game with less than a minute to go, unfortunately not being able to win the last seconds, St Mary’s lost by 1 point. Game three against Woodlawn ended in a loss. Game four against McAuley Catholic College ended in a draw, with both teams going one for one in points. The final game against Trinity had St Mary’s win by 5 points. Overall, the boys finished 2nd, which is a great result. Congratulations to the students for representing our College and playing some fantastic Volleyball.
Under 16 Boys
Game one saw the boys play against Mt Saint Pats, It was a very even match with the score going one for one almost all of the match, fortunately in the last 2 minutes of play the St Mary’s boys played some strong points and walked away, winning by 3 points. Game two against St Joseph’s saw a very unsteady start, with a few errors by the boys, however, they tried to recover the game on the back end, but left their run too late and lost. Game 3 and 4 saw the same result with a strong start for St Mary's, however Woodlawn and McAuley Catholic College played stronger second halves and walked away with the wins. St Mary’s last game was against Trinity. It was a great last game, with both teams contesting points strongly, with St Mary’s coming away with the win. The boys played well and represented our College with great sportsmanship throughout the day.

Year 12 v Staff
Game 1 Volleyball
Wednesday Week 5 saw the Teachers run out as winners 3-0, although it was far from easy. The Year 12’s began brightly but the Staff rallied late in game 1 winning some clutch points to take out the 1st set 15-11. A change of ends did not bring a change of fortunes for the Year 12’s with them rolling over easily 4-15 in game 2. Ms Maguire and Mr Lang destroyed anything that came across the net at a spiking height. Special mention to Mr Harper who got his serve on winning 10 consecutive points. Game 3 was a dead rubber but Year 12 rose from the grave to almost steal a famous last game going down 13-15.
Game 2- Netball
Wednesday, 4 September, Year 12 had a chance to redeem themselves in Netball against a staff side still on a high from their win 2 weeks earlier. Year 12 began brightly and led 3-1 at halftime, with some excellent passing and defence when staff had the ball. After the change of ends Year 12 were confident of equaling the games at 1 a piece, however this saw them take their foot off the pedal. The staff team sensing this, made their move after some positional changes allowing them to equal the score at 3-3 with only minutes remaining. Mr Chivers as GK was a rock in defence turning away multiple attacks and received the Players Player Award!
Although the Year 12’s had their chances, they were unable to capitalise in the last portion of the game and succumbed to immense pressure going down 3-5. The staff having won back the shield that Year 12 deservedly won in 2023 now have 2 weeks safe in the knowledge they cannot be overtaken. The Year 12 cohort was overheard discussing the fact they may go into an intense 5-day boot camp leading up to the final game of Touch Football on Wednesday of Week 9. It should be an absolute beauty!
