From the Principal
Another Beef Week has come and gone and I would like to mention what a great day it was. The weather was beautiful, attendance was excellent and the kids were really well behaved and thankful that they were able to spend the day doing beefy things. It was just what we needed after 2020 and missed out on so much. Dr Sally Towns (The Director of the Catholic Schools Office) visited, had a chat with some of our kids, had a beef and gravy roll and commented on the authentic community feel of this very Casino event. I know that all our kids had a great day, as did the staff.
Bishop Greg visited the Casino Parish last week and took the opportunity to speak to our students in Years 11 and 12. His words were open, direct and challenging. He challenged them all to be ‘good people’. He spoke about the ways people can be ‘good’ and what that may look like as they move through their late teens from school and into society. Thank you to Fr Peter and Bishop Greg for the opportunity for this address.
A message that I try to get across to the students is the importance of participation and reaching out. With effort, amazing things can happen. Everyday, there are students at this College challenging themselves and working towards their own goals. Whether the goal is big or little is irrelevant. It is making the decision to have a go, participate and reach out that sets our College apart. We really do ‘punch above our weight’ in so many instances.
Upcoming Events:
- Parent/Teacher/Student interviews are on in Week 10. While it is preferred that students with surnames beginning with A-L make appointment times for Tuesday, 22 June, and students with surnames beginning M-Z make appointment times for Wednesday, 23 June, it is not an issue if you need to change dates for other reasons. The Semester One reports will be going home this afternoon with students and details on how to book an interview are included on a document with the report.
- Athletics Carnival will be held next Thursday, 17 June at Queen Elizabeth Park 2. Students have been told that they need to come to school to get names marked off in the morning. They will then be taken by bus to the carnival and back to school in the afternoon. This is a COMPULSORY school day. NO students will be given permission to drive themselves and seniors are expected to travel with, and be a part of their house group on the day.
- Year 9 Reflection Day will be held on Tuesday, 22 June. More information will be forthcoming.
- The College will be celebrating NAIDOC Week on Monday, 21 June at 8.50am. This will be in the form of a liturgy organised and run by our Goori students. Dane Walker has also invited guest speakers for the liturgy. All are welcome to attend.
I am happy to inform parents that we have received samples of girls pants for sizing. The pants have been on the agenda for nearly 2 years and a lot of work has gone into the design, cut and material selection for these pants. We have placed an order this week and will place more as they come into the College. We have also ordered some to have in stock. We will let you know when they have arrived.
I would like to wish the four students well who are representing our College at the annual ‘Street Retreat’ next week. Chelsea Robertson, Elizabeth Robinson, Nick Griffiths and Jacob Toohey will be joining many other Year 11 students from around the Diocese to help out in various street ministries in Brisbane. This is an incredible experience for these students as they live out the College motto - to ‘Reach Out’.
Finally, on behalf of the entire College community I would like to offer condolences to Brock Dean (Year 12) on the passing of his Grandmother and to Katie Magnay (Year 9) and Connor Turner (Year 10) on the passing of their Great Grandmother. May they rest in peace.

MASKS ARE RECOMMENDED
From the Assistant Principal - Mission
We have many things going on at the College in the final weeks of term.
Respect
We are continuing our focus on respectful relationships and what this looks like for our students. Our students are being asked to maintain positive interactions with their peers and our staff. This includes the tone of voice we use as well as our choice of language.
I am very impressed with their continued improvement over the last few weeks. We look forward to seeing our young people continue to build positive relationships built on mutual respect and understanding.
Winter Sleepout
It is that time of year again. Winter sleepout will be held on the evening of Friday, 18 June. This event allows our students to be uncomfortable and gain a better understanding of lived reality of homelessness in our community. Students have the opportunity to sleep overnight at the College, and share a simple meal together. The students will be sleeping under the COLA, and will need to bring enough bedding and clothes to keep themselves warm. We ask parents to collect students at 7:30am on Saturday morning which should give students enough time to get to their weekend sporting commitments.
Shine Conference
Permission notes for the Shine Conference went out this week. This event is for our Ministry classes within the College. At Shine, our students gather with 350 young people from across the Diocese at Coffs Harbour. It is a great event and a fantastic opportunity to get to know other like minded students within our region.
Ignite Conference
Last call for all students wanting to attend Ignite. It will be held in the school holidays (September) this year. All notes must be returned by Tuesday, 15 June. Please contact the College to arrange a payment plan if required.

Subject Selections for Year 10 Going Into Year 11 - UPDATE
A decision has been made to change the format of the last two sessions for the Subject Selection process.
Session 4 & 5 will be replaced by a one day long session with 15 minute time slots during which parents/guardians & their Year 10 student sit down with a member of the School Leadership Team to discuss and sign off their subject choices. This will be the SETP (Secondary Education & Training Plan) interview.
The time slots will be booked through School Interviews (just like Parent/Teacher/Student interviews) and that day would be a pupil free day for the Year 10 students (only).
Details about this Subject Selection Day will be provided in a letter to parents in the coming weeks.
- A reminder of the link to the Stage 6 Subject Site which contains information about all of the subjects St Mary’s offers
- The Subject Selection Form for which there is a link on the above site is currently not taking responses but will go live later this term & close at 3pm on Tuesday, 13 July.
- Students & their parents/guardians are strongly encouraged to engage with the information on that site and direct any questions they may have to their teachers, the Leaders of Learning or myself.
Procedure for Being Absent on the Day of an Assessment Task
This is a reminder of what is required in case a student is away on the day of a task.
- The school needs to be contacted by 9am on the day informing us of that student’s absence
- IF the student is in Years 10 - 12, a medical certificate needs to be provided upon returning to school
- It is the responsibility of the student to organise a catch-up time for the missed task with their classroom teacher immediately upon their return to school
Please note that all of the above is outlined at the bottom of every Assessment Notification that is either handed out as a hard copy or posted on Google Classroom.

From the Leaders of VET, Careers and Resources
As we move closer to the second half of the year, Year 10 are looking at subjects and some are checking out industries they have researched through Work Experience. Year 12 are either preparing University applications or looking more closely at pathways to industries of interest.
One new option we have for Work Experience is Virtual Work Experience. This new feature has been added to our website. It allows students to explore workplaces such as Policing and Psychology where it is difficult for students to access directly due to privacy issues.
The website provides students with pre-work experience modules, mandatory for all work experience placements, activities relevant to their industry of interest, certificates and certificates to print off as evidence, which may be useful for part-time work. Vet nursing could be an example of this, depending on the availability of positions. This is a new feature and industries will be added to the website fortnightly.
Instructions for this experience may be found on our website under workplace learning/work experience.
If students are looking for virtual Work Experience outside of this option, we have a range of excellent resources available. Please contact me for more information if you are interested.

Understanding Vaping
The use of electronic cigarettes is on the rise, particularly among high school students and given that the use of these devices is a relatively new phenomenon, it is important to provide our students, parents and carers with some relevant background information.
Electronic cigarettes are battery-operated devices that heat a liquid to produce a vapour that is inhaled and designed to deliver the aerosol directly to the lungs. The composition of the e-cigarette liquids vary, however they all contain a range of different solvents and flavouring agents which have the potential to increase the risk of developing cardiovascular, cancer and respiratory diseases.
Some of these devices resemble conventional cigarettes while others look like everyday items such as pens and the newest and most popular vaping product is the JUUL, which resembles a USB memory stick. Companies are clearly targeting teens through social media influencers and their promotion of fruity pod flavours, which are now only sold online.
The Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is concerned that e-cigarettes have ‘renormalised’ smoking. While the damaging impact of smoking tobacco is well known, the short and long-term health effects of e-cigarettes are still being researched.
The Catholic Schools Office has prepared this infographic with important information on the dangers of vaping which we encourage you to read and share with your son or daughter. Parents are encouraged to discuss the dangers of nicotine addiction and include e-cigarettes in the discussion alongside alcohol and drugs. Our school is currently including discussion of these dangers within the PDHPE course.
If you do have any concerns about this issue, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

SMCC Athletics Carnival
Our annual College Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday, 17 June (Term 2, Week 9) at Queen Elizabeth Park 2. This is a compulsory school day for all students as far as attendance is concerned.
Students will come to school dressed in their house colours and attend regular Home Room at 8.45am before catching buses to QE2 with their house group. The carnival is scheduled to begin at 9.15am and conclude by 2.45pm, allowing students sufficient time to catch buses back to school in time for the final bell.
The high jump and 1500m events have already taken place earlier this week as we are unable to fit everything into one day. All other events can be nominated for on the day of the carnival with the exception of triple jump which required pre-nomination.
To qualify as part of the SMCC team for the Diocesan Athletics Carnival in Coffs Harbour on Thursday, 12 August (Term 3, Week 5) students must finish in the top 2 of each event.
The day is always a highlight on the school sporting calendar and we look forward to seeing all students there contributing towards their house’s quest for the Athletics Championship title.
U13 Boys Country Cup Rugby League - Mr Paul McCaffery
On Tuesday, 1 June our Under 13 boys competed in the Country Cup in Casino.
The side started unconvincingly against Kyogle High. Our self doubt seeing us lose a very ‘winnable’ match by 18-12.
In the second match we played Xavier College, who were very strong. It was a much improved effort from us, but we were beaten by 22-8.
Best players on the day were Rory McInnes, Isaiah-Joshua Roberts and Cameron Richards.
U15 Boys Country Cup Rugby League - Mr Bailey Veitch
Last Tuesday, the U15’s Rugby League Team Competed in the Country Cup Gala Day at Queen Elizabeth park. Two games were played on the day; the first against Xavier Catholic College, before a rematch against Casino High School. The boys played well and held their own against Xavier, before ultimately conceding two late tries and the loss. The second game against Casino High School was another close match, but despite scoring two tries each, the team lost 8-12 due to missed conversions. Well done to all involved, they did themselves proud.
Diocesan Junior Football (Soccer) Championships - Years 7-10 Boys - Mr Andy Fitness
On Wednesday, 2 June (Term 2, Week 7), our Years 7-10 boys soccer team travelled to Coffs Harbour to participate in the Lismore Diocesan Junior Football (Soccer) Championships.
Our first game saw the star player of the day, Beau Baildon, hit the crossbar from a freekick outside the box in the first half, followed by young gun Riley Grant coming close with a few one-on-one’s but putting them wide against the opposing goalkeeper, ending in a scoreless draw against McAuley Catholic College, Grafton.
The second game saw the boys lose 3-0. Though this game was by far our best team performance with some fantastic efforts from Alex Peart and Taj Crethar in defense, unfortunately St Joseph’s Regional in Port Macquarie were just too strong.
Coming into our third game against St Joseph’s, Banora Point, off the back of a defeat, the boys came out rearing and ready for another big game. Scoring the first goal of the day was Jonah Summers with some quick thinking in the box to stab home the goal and to put us 1-0 ahead. A relentless effort from St Joseph’s ended up seeing them score an equaliser from just inside of the halfway line in the second half to leave the game at 1-1, a disappointing result considering the fantastic team performance.
Due to the previous results, we could not make the semi finals, so with our fate decided, our fourth and final game allowed for the boys to try out some other positions for the purpose of having fun. Unfortunately this ended in a 5-0 defeat against the team that ended up winning the whole day, MacKillop College Port Macquarie.
A valiant effort throughout the day from all players, leaving co-coach Mal Norton and I, very proud. A special thanks to University prac student Andrew McCalman for coming down to support the team and coaches.
Diocesan Junior Football (Soccer) Championships - Years 7-9 Girls - Mr Aaron Kennedy
Last week our girls soccer team travelled to Coffs Harbour to participate in the Lismore Dio Gala day. Our girls played McAuley Grafton first up losing 1-0. We were very unlucky to lose the match with Chelsea Campbell hitting the post twice. Over the day, our girls also lost against John Paul College and also Mackillop. We did manage to beat Regional Port Macquarie 2-0 with goals coming from Erica Richards and Libby Walker. Special mention to Samara Leven who performed very well as goalkeeper.
Len Diett Shield - Round 4 vs Woodlawn
Our final pool game for the Len Diett Shield open boys rugby union competition saw us take on St John’s College, Woodlawn in a home game at Albert Park on Thursday, 3 June (Term 2, Week 7). Following some disappointing results in our previous outings, the boys were keen to put up a fight against a strong Woodlawn side. To add to the atmosphere of the afternoon, all of our Year 9 & Year 10 students came to cheer the St Mary’s boys on.
Unfortunately, Woodlawn was a class above. They came out strong and didn’t look like letting up. With an abundance of pace out wide, they were able to keep the ball alive and find plenty of space on our edges. The boys from St Mary’s showed plenty of resilience as they defended for what felt like an eternity. We began to string some nice passages of play together in attack, until a gruesome head clash between Joseph Brooks and Bradon Gumbleton paused the game momentarily as they were both removed from the field and taken to hospital. Upon the resumption of play, Will Ainsworth crashed over for our sole try of the afternoon which was converted by Kalen Olive. This was a nice consolation as the game was well out of reach, with the final score finishing Woodlawn 54 - St Mary’s 7.
Student Achievement - Holly Wall - AFL
Congratulations to Holly Wall (Year 10) who has been selected into the North Coast Force U17’s Youth girls AFL representative team. Holly will be competing in two representative carnivals within the next month or so at Warner’s Bay and Coffs Harbour. A fantastic achievement for Holly who only recently took up AFL and is currently playing with the Lismore Swans. On behalf of St Mary’s, I would like to wish Holly all the best in her upcoming competitions.

Indonesian Corner
Students had a visit from an Indonesian guest Ibu Valentina. We chatted about food, transport, clothing and housing and then we danced. Students had a two way exchange with Ibu Valentina all in Indonesian - showing just how far classes have come since the start of languages course.
Our guest kindly shared with us about her life in Indonesia and many students bravely asked her questions in Indonesian, while everyone recorded what they could understand in English. Ibu Valentina then led us in an Indonesian version of a line dance called "Gemu Fa Mi Re" and everyone's favourite move was 'the motorbike'. We then demonstrated for Ibu Valentina the Indonesian Acehnese Sitting clapping dance we have previously learned and she was impressed with our body percussion in a dance from from her own country.

Grin & Tonic
Year 9 and Year 10 students were once again entertained by ’Grin & Tonic’, a visiting Shakespearean Company who presented a performance of ‘Macbeth Reimagined’.
‘By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes’
Students watched the performance, immersing themselves in the haunted world where prophecies, power and passion rule.

SMCC Beef Week Writing Competition Sponsored by the Beef Week Committee, 2021
Beef Week 2021 in Casino, was a truly special time for our town to celebrate our ‘Community Heroes’. Unable to celebrate last year due to COVID-19, our community has endured a lot since our last Beef Week; drought, fires, flood and the pandemic. With the Beef Week Committee identifying this year’s theme as ‘Community Heroes’, it was a great opportunity to showcase our community heroes in writing. All students within the Casino community were invited to participate in the St Mary’s Catholic College, Beef Week Writing Competition. The College offered two divisions, Primary School and Secondary School. The College encouraged students to construct a short story to acknowledge any of the local heroes that had and continue to, support our community through drought, fire, floods and the pandemic. We must thank the President of the Beef Week Committee, Mr Frank McKey for sponsoring and assisting with the judging of this writing competition. Each division had 3 prizes awarded - First ($100), Second ($50), and Third ($30). The judges also acknowledged two additional entries with Highly Commended certificates.
The writing competition was a great success with many entries in both divisions from four different schools. The stories paid tribute to the incredible work of firefighter, SES, teachers, politicians, family and friends. We thank all the entrants for being brave enough to publish their work, have it judged and displayed in the Richmond Valley Council Library. We thank Gary Ellem the manager of the Library for his support in judging and displaying all the entries.
The winners in each division were:
Primary School:
First Place, Luke Smith from St Mary’s Primary School. Luke’s story was titled ‘The Blaze and the Bond’.
Second Place, Alayna Jonhston from St Mary’s Primary School. Alayna’s story was titled ‘Wild Fire’.
Third Place, Miley Amey from Casino Public School. Amey’s story was titled ‘Brenda Armfield is a Hero’.
Highly Commended Certificates, Connor Winters from St Mary’s Primary School. Connor’s Story was titled ‘The SES’, and Danielle Northfield from Casino Public School. Danielle’s story was titled ‘ Rappville Fires’.
Secondary School:
First Place, Tyler Winters from SMCC. Tyler’s story was titled ‘Rappville Firefighters’.
Second Place, Mark Camaroni from SMCC. Mark’s story was titled ‘The Flames’.
Third Place, Glen Camaroni SMCC. Glen’s story was titled ‘Unsung Heroes’.
Highly Commended Certificates, Georgia-May Brammah from SMCC. Georgia-May’s Story was titled ‘Firefighters’, and Mika Parker from Casino Public High School. Mika’s story was titled ‘Summer’.
